Sleeping Beauty Poem by Maureen Alikor

Sleeping Beauty

Tonight of all nights
you look fragile
like an egg
without its crate

Can I watch you?
As you lay your head
upon my laps
as I caress your hairs
and erase imaginary sweats

I feel your subtlety,
sleep has become elusive
while the night bird chirp
I can hear your heart throb
as it rises and falls

Tonight
I want to be your angel
to watch you sleep
and guard you all day

innocently you lay
harmless as a dove
fragile as a baby
unaware of hurt
relaxed and peaceful

tonight let me be,
be all I have ever wished to be
let me watch you dream
and see you blink
to the rays of the morning sun
as you wryly smile
bidding adieu
to a time of tranquility
and sweet innocence
