Sleep My Dear... Poem by Ganesh Veeraraghavan

Sleep My Dear...

Sleep my dear....

Krishna krishna sleep my dear
The night is come but don't fear
Close your eyes shut out the night
Close your eyes shut out the night

Maiya maiya if I close my lids
The night will enjoy easy success
I will boldly stare the night
And make it lose to early sunlight...

Krishna krishna sleep into a dream
Pots of butter and lots of cream
Close your eyes I will call the dream
Close your eyes I will call the dream..

Maiya maiya last night I was dreaming
Pots of butter from high roof hanging
Just a dream so I leapt for the pot
A wakeful gopi was watching it
She caught me tight as I was sleeping
And woke me up from my nice dreaming....

Krishna krishna even cats are silent
They sleep and recoup for catching the rodent
Sleep sleep you will regain energy
Sleep sleep you will regain energy

Maiya maiya you call me a rodent
Aren't you the cat ever pursuant
So go to sleep and recoup wholesome
Tomorrow we'll have a good cat and mouse game...
Maiya maiya you sweat and fret
You can't catch up I am very fast
And if I gain much more energy
Our race will be mere ceremony...

(Yes he is right he is a little mouse
He knows well all secret holes
Into the deepest heart He can enter
And scrape it clean and make it pure...)

Krishna krishna your friends have slept
With good sleep their bodies are built
Sleep sleep you will become strong
Sleep sleep you will become strong

Maiya maiya like a winner I am decorated
Like a conqueror I am always celebrated
And if I become stronger than my friends
How will they have their share of conquests...

Krishna krishna the demons are up
On children awake they will sup
Sleep sleep sleep quickly
Sleep sleep sleep quickly

Maiya maiya I will wait for the demons
I will teach them hard lessons
They will flee this land of Gokul
I will make them very fearful

Krishna krishna now close your eyes
Your father has switched off the lights
He will say I am not able mother
He will ask me to learn from grandmother

Maiya maiya please hand me over
And throw a challenge to my father
If he can make me sleep this night challenge he Challenged thus, he will run away in fright...

Saama Daana Bheda Danda
Nothing works on her little Krishna
If she coaxes he coaxes more
If she tempts she falls to his lure
She plants envy, with love he unites
If she threatens he's ready for fights...

Yashoda goes on and on
Sleep has not krishna won
So sleep swallows the tired mother
Krishna wins nights forever....

If night or sleep ever succeeds
How can he play his truant deeds
If night can throw her web of sleep
How will krishna then secretly creep
How will he get to the milkmaids' hearts
And dance there in nightly sports...
