Single Flame Poem by Tessa Monaghan

Single Flame

Theres a fire
A single flame
It sits in front of me
Mocking me
I stair at it
It stairs back
I run my fingers through it
Black they turn
Did it hurt?
No
Not at all
I can only wish
Wish that there was a bit of pain
In that fraction of one
One second

Theres a single flame
Here it sits
Dancing
Mocking
Stairing
So tempting
But still so calm
Why it just sits
Dancing?
The mystery is unsolved

My fingers black
No pain felt
So now what
What is there to do with it?
No pain at all
But I can only wish.

That’s the single flame
The flame of which no pain
But only a single wish
If I’m lucky double wish
The flame of no pain
