Signs Poem by Scott J. Shepard

Signs

For some, finding God isn't easy.
those who feel less than blessed

Though no familiar face resembles God,
no statue to depict. The sculptor had
told me the curve of his lips were always ajar.

Pareidolia; or sporadic blueprints for
spiritual seekers, is often sustained
fully in the world around us.

Someone had once said that God
was a manifestation of experience.

That we as people comprehend all
things as we relate them to ourselves...

...subconsciously pushing our
own ideals, as we see them,
to represent God speaking.

I once saw a peace sign sturdy as a tree
while I smoked my first cigarette early in the dawn.

I took a picture and sent it to a friend, but she
couldn't see the peace.

I wondered if it was my own arrogance that expected
the world to envision itself how I saw it in that moment.

Consider it a momentary lapse of stranger reasoning
