She Walks Along... Poem by Jessica Cummings

She Walks Along...

She walks along
disheveled in her mind
shadow of a glimmer of hope in her eye
arms heavy from holding on
to dreams for so long
that they've stacked themselves
like pieces of paper
with post-it note reminders
of memories in her heart
possibilities of Someday
half remembered but not forgot
She holds them close
as if to preserve their delicacy
and hide her own from the world

A gust of reality ruffles her
causing the dreams to scatter
because she
wasn't thinking
and
let
go...

She picks up
her dreams
the wishes of her heart
sullied and strangely intact...
and heads off
to carry them elsewhere
