Shadows Poem by Edward Rhodes

Shadows

Sometimes I walk into the shadow
Return to what I used to know
With hopes deferred and dreams delayed
But I will sit here in the shade

And thinking on the passing years
How age accentuates my fears
Frailties and weaknesses displayed
But I will sit here in the shade

And though my eyes have not seen death
I sometimes think I feel his breath
So close, it makes my heart afraid
But I will sit here in the shade

And when I walk in summer's heat
The light exposes my defeat
In shame I've watched my sins parade
But I will sit here in the shade

And in the strife and weary toil
Which serves, all my content to spoil
Just to maintain the masquerade
But I will sit here in the shade

Far from the midday sun I see
The shadow of an apple tree
And beauty that will never fade
And I will sit here in the shade
