Set To Ashes Poem by Andrus Cassian

Set To Ashes

The story of my life
Still in construction, still in progress
But I say to you now
It's a nightmare
It's a nightmare so last, so long
I dread for waking up
I'm afraid to wake up
My only comfort is sleep so I won't have to dream at all
I wish I could set my days to ashes
And set my nights
Like a scene from the Garden of Eden
Yet I'm 10 for 10 waiting in a 100 length line for a miracle
My hands, clenched, prepared to fight
Only no one's in sight
An empty corner accompanied by an empty audience
With a growing silence
When did this needle of lead become my lonesome companion
A freak-show contained in a cage by choke chain
When did that become me
How long has everyone been standing there
Pointing, laughing
The same length of time
The man on the moon has been serenading the sun to come Back by it's side
Earth...I despise you
Yet I can't escape you
I'm grounded, chained to you by my neck
So in pain I curse your name in every possible way
Shedding a drop of blood from my eye
In sorrow for the way...
