Seasonal Thoughts

Golden leaves fall from the trees,
summer breeze now a winters freeze,
as winter takes it’s strangle hold,
people wrap up in defence of the cold,
animals of the forest go into hibernation,
birds flock together ready for migration,
colourful flowers nowhere to be seen,
the only colours now are the evergreens,
nights grow longer and the days are shorter,
ponds in the fields are full of ice, not water.

But spring arrives without warning,
you wake up to find a beautiful morning,
the birds congregate for their long flight home,
and the animals appear for a springtime roam,
flowers arise they’ve been gone for so long,
birds in the trees sing a magical song,
bluebells rise as blue as can be,
and carpet the forest as blue as the sea,
a kestrel hovers in search of a mole,
but he is hidden in a labyrinth of holes.

Summer arrives with temperatures high,
with nothing above just a clear blue sky,
leaves on the trees now shelter the wood,
under the canopy of its great emerald hood,
see the young birds trying to fly,
coaxed along by their mothers cry,
down in the pond the spawn starts to hatch,
a heron wades in, in hope of a catch,
the duster tailed fox is out on the prowl,
and at dusk you’ll hear the old tawny owl.

Autumns here the leaves start to fall,
wrapping the floor with a crisp golden shawl,
trees like skeletons silhouette against the sky,
birds perched on branches getting ready to fly,
a squirrel collects food to store in his dray,
all made of twigs and lined with warm hay,
all the young birds are now fully grown,
soon they’ll be off to their new winter home,
so it’s back where we started with winter up ahead,
back to the season that most of us dread.
