Saying Yes Or No Poem by gershon hepner

Saying Yes Or No

Britain can say yes or no,
but Germany and even France,
can do just what they like, and so
the Brits no longer have a chance
to make a great impression on
the continent from which they are
divided. Whether pro or con,
there is no point to join or spar
against what French and German
politicians may decide,
for it is they now who determine
what will happen, and deride
the Brits whose influence is now
restricted to themselves, backbenched
like those backbenchers in the House,
whose views, however deep entrenched,
don’t count much more than Mickey Mouse.
They’ve lost a good chance, Sarkozy
declares, to shut up, but to interfere
is still for them extremely cosy,
pound foolish, maybe, but a lot less dear.
