Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again

by xu zhi mo

Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Quietly I wave good-bye
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.

The golden willows by the riverside
Are young brides in the setting sun;
Their reflections on the shimmering waves
Always linger in the depth of my heart.

The floating heart growing in the sludge
Sways leisurely under the water;
In the gentle waves of Cambridge
I would be a water plant!

That pool under the shade of elm trees
Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;
Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds
Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream?

To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream
To where the green grass is more verdant;
Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight
And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight.

But I cannot sing aloud
Quietness is my farewell music;
Even summer insects heap silence for me
Silent is Cambridge tonight!

Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Gently I flick my sleeves
Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away

From 1920 to 1922, poet xu zhi mo studied in Cambridge, and in 1928, xuzhimo visited Cambridge again.When he was on the journey home, he wrote this poem which was the most famous poem of him.Before the age of 24, xuzhimo prefered social contract and theory of relativity rather than poetry.It was Cambridge that opened the poet's inspiration.Cambridge awaked his nature of being a poet which hides deep inside his heart for long.

轻 轻 的 我 走 了 , 正 如 我 轻 轻 的 来 ;

那 河 畔 的 金 柳 , 是 夕 阳 中 的 新 娘 ;

软 泥 上 的 青 荇 , 油 油 的 在 水 底 招 摇 ;

但 我 不 能 放 歌 , 悄 悄 是 别 离 的 笙 箫 ;

悄 悄 的 我 走 了 , 正 如 我 悄 悄 的 来 ;
