Save Me A Place Next To You Poem by Daniel P Martin

Save Me A Place Next To You

Rating: 5.0

For the many long years, we travelled together; our paths would seldom part,
My journey goes on in solitude now; you’re a passenger in my heart,
I said to you so many times before, but now more than never its true,
You go ahead, and I’ll follow later, but save me a place next to you.

Our story began with love and with time, in those halcyon days of old,
Love was nurtured, as the years flew by, oblivious to events foretold,
It was time, our enemy, our singular foe, plotting his defiant coup,
You go ahead, and I’ll follow later, but save me a place next to you.

Though many a bump and a pothole, our adventure persisted unscathed,
Neither desperado nor highwayman, our utopia could they stave,
With every stride and every step, to my aching foot you were the shoe,
You go ahead, and I’ll follow later, but save me a place next to you.

And so, I continued, I fulfilled my role, I did all of me that was asked,
I journeyed on without complaint, and rarely did dwell on the past,
I lived out our dreams, I followed your call; I saw every colour and hue,
You go ahead, and I’ll follow later, but save me a place next to you.

My concluding chapter has now been penned, for my preordained finale,
I hasten the falling of the grains of sand, imploring them no more to dally,
My weakness and frailty hearten me now, as weariness arrives on cue,
You go ahead, and I’ll follow later, but save me a place next to you.

A grand description of the great disappointment in life, along with a sure sentiment of the true-grit within life that keeps us ever moving onward in great hope. Wonderfully written poem! I love it.

this is excellent poetry.... the journey of life, and the rare and lasting joy of companionship... whether it be a lover, a friend, or the 'stranger' that lives within us all!
