Reunion Poem by Caroline Misner

Reunion

Rating: 5.0

I don’t know why I’m here.
You summoned me; I came.
You knew
I would always return.
Our laughter bumps the air between us;
we circle one another like spry cats;
we speak haltingly, as though
our conversations were bred just for us.
This is what we both wanted.

I curse your mama-heart for all its worth
and the black ogre that occupies
this second chamber of our lives.
Your trinkets are laid out in clarity,
the leather caskets have glass ceilings
so we may peer through and see
Snow White steeping in roses,
vines sprouting between her fingers.

You’ve cornered my breath in your pocket;
you toss your hair, laugh,
and enquire about my health, the family.

In the back room I see
your cosmetic bag bulging;
this is where you sculpt your beauty,
just as I remembered:
the lipstick, the powder, a shade
darker than my own wan complexion,
the rouge you dust on your cheeks
and nose to give the illusion of a tan,
a pink stick of deodorant.

I haven’t the courage to touch
these precious artefacts, to place
your face over mine
and wear it like a mask.

You are the one eye I cannot shut.
