Remembrance At Thorney Poem by Bob Nottage

Remembrance At Thorney

Rating: 3.0

Not for us, the blood red trenches
Instead we sit on wooden benches

Not for us, a watery grave
Instead, our memories of the brave.

Not for us, that final flight
Instead, we come to do what's right

Not for us, the Padre sermoned
Instead, for those in far off Helmand

Not for us, the Last Post played
Instead, we stood and thought and prayed

Not for us but for those brave people
Instead, who rest above the steeple

Not for us, the ultimate price
Instead, we thank their sacrifice

Yes for us, it's Remembrance day
Instead of just our normal day

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem after attending a Remembrance Day Service at Thorney Island in 2010. The service was particularly poignant as it commemorated the recent death in Afghanistan of a member of my old Territorial Army squadron based at Thorney. Cpl Sean Reeve.
