Remember Tiananmen Square (June 4,1989) Poem by Leonard Dabydeen

Remember Tiananmen Square (June 4,1989)

How the student
left his noodles
somewhere called home
just to be here
no ipod
nor cell phone
but just his back-pack
and a quick mind
and a high-low monotone
gathering voices
like glasnost
wide as the open sky
where little birds
fly hither and thither
all hoping for change
all want their voices heard
free to dissent
free to agree
free to disagree
and placards
boasting defiance
to see Hu Yaobang
with empty stomach
aching to be heard
raising hands to protest
as the Gate of Heavenly Peace
whispers in aberration
only to be slaughtered
or blasted into oblivion
as the world cries
like raindrops from the sky.
