Relevant Movement Poem by Jason Murak

Relevant Movement

I started writing poetry, because I couldnt sing
and when a good lyricist cant sing, He will raps
And if he doesnt sound gangster enough, Or he's white,
He's a poet, He's me
But hip hop will always be
The roots to my tree
the salt to my sea
And My mind is the lock to its key
Hip hop opens up all my wildest ambitions
I realized, the best message you can give, is one that is hand written
Hip Hop, is misunderstood, KRS-one explains it best
I cant perceive how people think radio rap is better than the rest
Because where Im from, rapping isnt about cars or bacardi
Its about hanging out with friends while you were jammin bob marley
It was about relevant information from here to Zimbabwe
It was dope, clever lyrics from Mos Def, Talib Kweli
A lot of rappers are just rapping about rapping
Rapping about drugs, sex and parties like nothing else is happening
I dont want to start beef but Im about to start fussing
When will radio rappers today, say something with substance?
When will I heard a rhyme about a woman that doesnt have any cussing?
About, 'Dude she brought sexy back, forget that homie Justin! '
And from my stand point, The N-word?
How could that be okay?
Youve got guys walking around saying that all day
The way i see it, there is one race, the human race,
and at the end of the day, The Grim Reaper is always at the finish line, waving his scythe like a checkered flag
Hip Hop is poetry, its people conveying
their message, whether it through beats and rhymes
or on streets with Nines
Inbetween these blue lines
My mind confides
If someone says your wack, its lies,
Because it only matters if the poem is good, In your eyes
