Regret Poem by Ibn Ali

Regret

I wish I hugged my father more,
When he was alive,
I wish I argued less and bit my tongue with swallowed pride,
I wish I listened,
I should've done away with convention,
I wish I kissed him,
I should've paved the path with gold, And let him lead in every instance,
I hate that I'm so stubborn,
I wish I told him that I loved him much more often,
I hope he died repenting,
I supplicate Allah forgives him,
I should've just gave in,
But we're both too strong willed to forgo the win,
I should've called him more,
And gave him everything his heart wished for,
I could've been a better son,
If I showed him half the love I showed my mum,
I wish I was by his bed when death came to visit,
If only he could see the tears,
I'd clasp his palm in mine,
So he knew how much I really cared,
I missed the chance to say goodbye,
Place my lips between his brow,
For that final kiss goodnight.
