Red Dress - Poem by Robert Murray Smith

She was short, pretty in a slight way.
Long hair, piercing eyes, pert.
In her vision a young cool man.
Their eyes met, locked.

He asked her to sing.
Out came the voice of an angel.
He stood up, paused, then showed her to a seat.
'You have the gig, but wear only a red dress, on Saturday.'

Saturday night.
She arrived bright, red dress tight.
Lifting a mike she sang blues.
An ethereal voice raised the ceiling, applause.

After the show, drinks, too many.
He invited her home.
To bed, a symphony, all night long.
At dawn she left with her red dress, bright eyes, extra pert.

    Red Dress
Robert, it's amazing how quickly your mind can switch from profound to whimsical. When reading your poetry, you never know what to expect. And that's what makes it fun amusing informative. Thanks for the all the surprises.
This one reminds me of the Al Capone era. And the song Lady In Red. Extra Pert!

I heard a joke one time about a man that married a lady only because he fell in love with her singing. When they woke up the morning after their honeymoon, he saw how she looked (wasn’t pleasant to the eyes) and said, “Sing baby sing! ” I thought that’s where this poem was going. (Report) Reply

I love this story, I can picture that red dress glistening in the light as she sang and how she smoothed out the creases the next morning when she left. Beautiful (Report) Reply

    Romantic Lady in Red
A very romantic extra pert poem Robert :) A nice bit of tight bright writing. Vivid imagery and feeling conveyed with color, clothes, and clipped language. I enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing. (Report) Reply

A straightforward narrative behind which the poetic machinery suggests much more to imagine. Very nice.

An enchanting write that weaves a lovely pattern of emotions. A chance meeting leaves behind a plethora of beautiful memories. In life such beautiful encounters are usually brief but their echoes are loud n long. Red dress is an apt title for it symbolises the beauty n pleasure of the happening. A lovely write. An utterly charming poem. This one will set me dreaming all night. A beautifully relaxed style.
If I could sing, which I can't, I'd sing it. Maybe in the bath, out of ear-shot!
