Reading Kipling Poem by George Hunter

As I was making supper
The other day
I hummed a tune
Called Mandalay.

That Kipling sure
Knew what to say
When he wrote:
“An’ the dawn comes up
like thunder
outer China ‘cross the bay.”

I closed mine eyes
And I could almost see:
“There’s a Burma girl a settin’’’
and I know she thinks of me.”

I went and got my Kipling down
But had an India Pale Ale first.
Then read that famous line:
“Where there aren’t no Ten Commandments
an’ a man can raise a thirst.”

Wow! , that dude sure knew
How to write.
I could sit and read him
All through the night.

I’d forgotten about supper
As I took my seat
And started reading:
“An’ East is East and West is West
and never the twain shall meet.”

How I love those good old rhymes
Written way before my times.
I’ll just sit here and read away
And worry about supper another day.
