Ramayana Part V Iii King Ravana's End

Now they planned for the final and decisive assault,
A huge army at the seashore made a halt.

Vibhishan, brother of Ravna sensed the terror among people,
Advised to make a truce to avoid Lanka’s annihilation in total.

Vibhishan humbly requested to send Sita back to her husband soon,
But Ravna paid no heed rather insulted telling him Rama’s goon.

At last Vibhisan left Lanka and took shelter in Rama’s camp,
The death sentence for Ravna got Vibhisan’s surety stamp.

Vibhisan’s coronation was a gesture of obvious future kingship,
In reciprocation he swore to be ever faithful to his lordship.

To cross the roaring sea was still a doubt,
But inscription of Ram’s name enabled the stones to float.

A bridge was built across the sea miraculously,
Ram and Laxman led the army of warriors nonchalantly.

Rama sent Angad, son of Bali to Lanka as an ambassador of peace,
Foreboded Ravna to shun his arrogance and make Sita’s hasty release.

But Ravna was foolish and hell bent upon a battle,
His every act confirmed obliteration of Lanka and its people.

The army of uncountable monkeys paraded in battle order,
Touched Rama’s holy feet, sallied forth to show their valour.

Their slogans of victory echoed all the directions,
Frenzied to fight without fear and consequences.

Soon a fierce battle began which shook the Earth and Heaven,
War cries, clanging of swords, swish of arrows created unbearable din.

Rattle of racing chariots with horses berserk and neighing,
Dust storms over the battle field turned it dark and terrifying,

Warriors fought with rage and savagery unexpected,
Monkeys and bears rampaged battlefield undaunted.

Jamvant the formidable warrior of bear clan,
Mauled and tore many demons with great élan.

Many were dead and wounded were no less,
Each day the situation was getting bad to worse.

Ravna’s brother Kumbhakarna came to battle very hungry,
Started devouring monkeys menacing the Sugreeva’s army.

His gigantic stature and immense strength did massacre,
He was able to create a battle scene hideously macabre.

Finally Rama had to intervene to end the demon’s atrocities
That was a half victory for the discouraging army of monkeys.

On an unfortunate day Laxman got wounded by Meghnad fatally,
His life could be saved as Hanuman brought the Sanjivani promptly.

This unpropitious incident acted as fuel to fire,
Rama lost his tamper; consequences were going to be dire.

His wrath erupted even to annihilate the universe,
Oaths of revenge he took with every possible curse.

Using slew of celestial weapons of mass destruction,
Volley of fiery arrows, doing horrendous devastation.

Next day Laxmana took the command not letting Meghnad to hide,
After a long and deceptive fight, Meghnad, scourge of gods died.

Ravana lost all his near and dear tragically,
Now he could only repent on his own folly.

A pang of vengeance ravaged his form and soul,
More like a beast, lost his wit and prudence all.

He was gloomy and stuck in a precarious situation,
No retreat but to embrace the evident prosecution.

At last came out to make a last effort to win,
His faltering steps were akin to a helpless lion.

Deadliest of the weapons could not make Ravana die,
All were anxious as he was getting foothold by and by.

Ravana was now in a death reincarnated role,
Allies seemed losing ground with heavy death toll.

But time and place for his death was predetermined,
As Vibhisan told Ram where to strike to make an end.

An arrow in his naval dried the eternity providing elixir all,
His death relieved the Mother-Earth from the sinful soul.

It was a harrowing tale of Rama’s odyssey,
Who fought for establishing justice and humanity.

His exile was a blessing in disguise,
He salvaged many condemned souls to life.

The reunion of Ram and Sita was an occasion hilarious,
Blessed with flowery shower by the Gods and Goddesses.

Their return to Ayodhya was celebrated as Diwali,
A festival still celebrated since that day continually.

Lastly Ram became the Honourable King of Ayodhya,
Flourished with peace and harmony under the “Ram Rajya”.

Ram and Sita enjoyed every moment of nearness,
Reminiscing the long spell of separation and languish.

Complement of each other a fact unquestionable,
Sita’s loyalty and Rama’s love were unfathomable.

If she was an icon of beauty, he was an epitome of Godliness,
They were two with souls united in an eternal bond of oneness.
