Quod Erat Demonstrandum Poem by Stuart Kaler

Quod Erat Demonstrandum

What proof can I offer you that love exists?

...what syllabic alchemy can I conjure to make you love?

I know how to make you hate with a word...

....yes.... I'm talking to you - you spic, kike, gook, honky muther-fu****, N-WORD! ! !

I even know how to make you lust with few utterances....

....a small stream of steamy, salaciousness would suffice to ply you with desire...

But...love.... that is harder...

I have tried counting the ways....and comparisons to summer days...

...they speak the universal - but slightly out of focus...

A dash of desperation, of sorrow and loss aids towards the goal...

Antietam, Gallipoli, D-day,9-11.... they work to feel real human and tragic loss of loved ones and cause...

But you, dear Reader, a thousand generations removed from this hand...

...will find these searing, sorrowful sentiments sterile - as mention of the Peloponnesian War is to me...

Try this.....

'Hush now, my dearest.... I know that the pain of this world may be too much to bear...

...if you have to leave, it's OK...I understand'.
