Purdah Poem by Dianne Borsenik

Purdah

in the crucible
of their relationship
he beat her
soft, porcelain body
into a gray powder

mixed it
with the ashes
of her tears
and swallowed
her whole

the newspaper
did not remark upon
her hair the color of mud
nor the child
curled like a fist
inside her womb
