Ptsd (A Heavy Metal Song) Poem by William McGehee

Ptsd (A Heavy Metal Song)

(opening voice over)
'The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war' (GEN MACARTHUR)

Hey there, MF, have you ever had a dream?
A dream so cold, a dream so dark,
You woke and had to scream.
I'll tell you, MF, I've dreamt it all before
I felt it, MF, on the day I went to war.

Hey there, MF, have you ever felt your death?
A broken hand, far reaching out,
To rob you of your breath.
I'll tell you, MF, I feel him every night
I met that MF the day I left to fight

I'm standing on the jagged edge of a giant precipice
I'm broken and I'm haunted staring at the black abyss

Hey there, MF, don't you try to understand
What we went through, what it felt like
To kill another man.
We left those MF lying face down in the dust
But those dirty MF keep on haunting all of us.

I'm standing on the jagged edge of a giant precipice
I'm broken and I'm haunted staring at the black abyss

Hey there, MF, don't you turn and walk away
You said you cared, you asked me how
I live through every day.
I'll tell you, MF, I'm in a living hell
You asked me, MF, but you hoped I wouldn't tell
