Promises Poem by Mary Gilliam

Promises

Like little children we all believe
The promises that we speak
The oaths and pinky swears that we all declare
We believe in happiness that we cannot compare
We wish on stars and eyelash kisses
But as we age our hearts grow leaden, weighed down by abandoned wishes
We become 'practical, wise'
But we only tell lies
Why can't we go back to our innocence of pinky swears
The day of wishes, kisses, and tall tales
Days of foolish games and play instead of dawns of hopeless days
We used to believe
'Never make a promise you can't keep'
During youth to break a promise was to kill your friendship
Now truth has no meaning
The lines of good and evil have been blurred
We are battered flags over raging battles
We are torn books
Our knees are bruised from kneeling
Asking for forgiveness
We pledge 'I'm going to change! '
But then do it over again
We all yearn to be young again
To not make the same mistakes
But we are still young and foolish
We are not capable of keeping even the smallest of promises
No one will change
