Progress In Reverse Poem by Reid Laurence

Progress In Reverse

Imagine...
Sitting in your car
But cannot see ahead
The road before
Is to the rear
And filled with fallen dead

What evil is this twist afore
Where view is misconstrued
And taken fright
You strain to look
In back
Where front is viewed

What premise has befallen
Or could it be a dream
The handiwork
A giant's hand
Of some misguided scheme

In fear you break
To stop the car
As any driver would
But motion cease
The time does not
You pray it only could

How can this be
You come to ask
Where motion is confused
Do I control
The car I drive
How is it I've been used

Is time ahead but killing me
The view a strange portent
I wish that I
Could look behind
Reverse my life intent

But yet the car moves faster
And further down the path
Where lines of morbid brothers
Do pave the way en masse

You wish it were not true
You pray it not the case
But corpses pile top the next
In ever greater pace

Is this progress you presume
When forward thinks it so
But look behind
And see yourself
Among the fallen rows
