Pretension Poem by Sarah Elizabeth Clark

Pretension

I expect genius
To be great and raw
Modern.

To astound my fans
And say ‘Bah! ’ to my critics
As if they never spoke at all.

My friends, colleagues,
They should be the same,
Like Chaplin, Dali, Morrison and Poe.

A handful of us
Will change the history of the world
Our professions.

And from our creative standpoints
Behave like rock stars and politicians
If we survive long enough.

We will teach our children
To question the tapestry of the Earth
In cafes and bars at 3am.
