Prayer Ii Poem by Bernard Jess Sagpang

Prayer Ii

If I set sail in these oceans

to farthest seas and unseen shores

to barren lands and mountains high

to wilderness; uncertainty

would You be there to look for me?

If I depart to roads unpaved

to cities burned and desolate

to lands beneath named savage

to brokenness; infidelity

would You be there to rescue me?

If I decide to fly away

to skies up high no birds have known

above the storms, towards the sun

to stars my dream; impossible

would You be there to fly with me?

And…

If I deny your precious gifts

and run away with unbelief

to the darkness no light has shone

to death below; eternity

would You be there to die for me?

I have doubted and doubted still

my eyes have sinned; faith so little

my heart’s deceits took me enslaved

to no escape; condemnation

Would You be there to welcome me

Back to where You are?

In this I am now so certain

that I needed You, a Savior

and that only in You I’ll find

no other kind of salvation.

Jesus, save me!
