Poetry Release Poem by Aisha Evans

Poetry Release

So they wanted me to write a poem
So that’s just what I did
It helped to give them some insight
Of what goes on in my head
It helps me to express myself, and all my concerns
It teaches them my lifestyle and what I care to learn
So now that I’ve got your attention
Let me care to mention, why I feel like such a stranger,
From another dimension.
You see poetry is my escape from this ugly reality
Where people are hated over religion and nationality
Stepped on and runned down, no apologies
Everyday life is treated like a game of monopoly
Youngster’s gang banging on the streets
Where hustlers drive around blasting beats
Packed with heat you will get blast on these streets
Prostitutes out of date the pretty girls be acting fake
They all sleep, closed eyes not awake
How you debate about peace when you’re fueled off of hate?
It starts in the households now it's in the school
Kids breaking all the rules, authorities trick the fools
Hood legends got violence looking cool
In a way I can't blame em people push buttons it's hard to tame em
Yet alone train em and if they heart ice cold you can't change em
Lock em up and chain em the justice system just hanged him
So everybody walking around like a time bomb waiting to explode
Paranoid and bold
The future we mold
The past we can't hold
Be wise I was told
Just wait and behold
Release my fury on the paper
The whole world might hate her
Trick and date rape her
Shackles tried to break her
Chains to overtake her
To the jail she's been chauffeured
In solitary hasn't seen the day of light
In months but she still writes
Won’t go down without a fight
So congratulate her
Just be there when she's released
When she puts her mind at ease
Where she escapes to retreat
Where the ink plants a seed
At her poetry release
