Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,

Simple, elegant poem but not even close to understanding the feminine mystique.
There is no spiritual aspect brought in. No doubt, it is clever and I like the refrain of 'phenomenal woman'. But to dub it number one on the list in the face of other great poems is really a disappointment to for 'poemhunter'. Please tell me how they are rated, by who, or is this the quality of our poets or readers? Maya is maya (the illusory energy in Sanskrit) . Well, she is a good poet...and deep in her own way...but really, she doesn't pack the punch of a Bukowski or a ee cummings poem...Number One? Maybe number two...at best...I am a curious now...I am going to see who is number 500...

fellas, this poem is good not because of how well it's written or because it empowers women. it is good because it shows other women of color, or women of any race for that matter, that they CAN be confident in their own skin, no matter how they look...(yes, there's a difference between empowerment and showing proof that confidence is achievable) ...it's passionate, and speaks out about the fact that yes, Ms. Angelou WASN'T perfect, but that didn't stop her from being happy with herself. it's refreshing to have a woman with so much literary power present this idea: that a woman doesn't have to be anatomically perfect to feel perfect. and could you please stop attacking this poem, just because it is on the top of the list? its not OUR fault that it's there, nor is it Ms. Angelou's fault. take it up with the website managers.

on the other hand, ladies, this poem is NOT perfect. nor do i believe that it should be number one. i enjoy this poem, yes, but top of the list? i think not. there is plenty of other literature out there to place above this. you may think this is great, but there are quite a few more who don't think it is, as is obvious by the comments. frankly, men don't find this poem so phenomenal, pun intended, i apologize, because they've been empowered for centuries, and don't understand why women need to feel empowered.

and to both sides, please don't argue. different people will have different opinions.

*sigh* now i'll get personally attacked for asking people to be civil. THAT is real proof of where society is going.....

It doesn't surprise me that the high majority of the awful comments on this poem are from men. Barry...I'd like to see you write something that even comes close to the perfection of this poem. Just the fact that you criticize it just goes to show how shallow and narrow minded you are. Women are beautiful, no matter what they look like, because beauty isn't on the outside, but from the inside. It takes a very intelligent and open minded person to realize that which just proves my point...

All in all this is a wonderful poem and every woman out there should read it!

    This is #1? ? I think not.

When I was young, it was not cool to write about the shape, the color or the size of a woman of color..I found this poem to be very happy and it makes me feel good. The writing and how it flows....well it isn't for men. It is a womans' story and we don't always speak in a flowing manner. We speak with emotion and I FEEL this poem..because you know what I am a 'Phenomenal Woman'...Love this poem.

will everyone please stop being nice about this poem, i felt that from a critical point of view it was disjointed and didnt flow anything like as well as it could, i feel the subject matter was poor.

This is quite possibly the worst display of language and writing skill i have ever come across and i had to proof read tony blair's speeches. George bush could have written better and he has the IQ of common garden squirrel. Give up writing and go home. =[
