Phenomenal I Poem by Jayatissa K. Liyanage

Phenomenal I

Rating: 5.0

I bought it, for me, out of my money
And it is mine; no one else can claim rights
Except my own-self.

Me, my, mine, and myself all orbit around I
Entailing the whole lot within one entity!
Can not be without them, we feel, don’t we?
But the question is, who is this I?

One may show I, touching one’s own body
Implying this physique tantamount to I
Does the assembly of limbs, organs et cetera
Constitute the I in question?

One may say, they are mine and it is my body!
They constitute my body, which is undoubtedly mine
Very well; but where is the precise I, then?

What happens, if parts are separated, one by one?
Where will the I be, then?
Do I, my and mine still hold good?
Moment every body-part is claimed as mine
Will the I be still there to claim the ownership of parts?

One may deem body and mind in unison
Being entailed in one grand entity,
And intrigued by consciousness to claim I
What is mind, where is it found and who has it?
Can one see, smell, taste or image mind?

Mind does not cling to the body all the time; does it?
Mind roams about recognizing no boundary!
Has mind dissociated from I, then?
Where does consciousness remain at that instant?

What happens to the I, when mind sneaks out?
Does the I still hold on, knowing not where mind is?
When I does not exist, where do me, my, mine and myself be?

I is only a phenomenal entity, conditioned by
Consciousness, mind-elements and material parameters
Having no base, no form and fleeting all the time
As Enlightened One discoursed
Features only impermanence and non-selfness!
