Ph: Love: Can You? Poem by Brian Johnston

Ph: Love: Can You?

Rating: 5.0

Can you hear the water in the creek,
Can you see the tears that stain my cheek,
Can you feel the pain that I can't speak,
Can you?

Can you appreciate my art,
Can you divine what's in my heart,
Can you imagine us apart,
Can you?

Can you breathe me, just inhale,
Can you see behind the veil,
Can you drink from this lost grail,
Can you?

Can you never treat me like a toy,
Can you see the man inside the boy,
Can you let me fill your heart with joy,
Can you?

Can you always enjoin my smile,
Can you persist the extra mile,
Can you my slip-ups not compile,
Can you?

If these small things you can do,
God! Please take my IOU,
There's no doubt I will be true,
To you.

Nice poem.. joking reply.....10 I believe in simplicity As it is blessed by an almighty I may need a person Who has calm nature with reasons? It is neither me Nor anybody else Who can decide destiny If so, I shall be really happy

i really like the rhyming and the rhythm and repetition. i'm not sure who is speaking, or to whom who is speaking; you and some woman you know? /knew? or are you talking to the one this poem is dedicated to? and, of course, that person does NOT exist! didn't i tell you already? i've never been married. ever. hee-hee. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - i suppose my favorite part is: If these small things you can do, God! Please take my IOU, There's no doubt I will be true, To you. .......................even though it does mention the Big Guy/Big Gal. however, one of the things you ask if she/he? can do is: Can you imagine us apart, SO, my question is..........if he/she/it can NOT imagine us apart, does that me you might NOT be true? ? ? ? HMMM? ==================================== thanks for sharing. sorry for being tardy commenting (not too sorry, as i commented somewhere else already) . AND the person-who-does-not-exist likes it very much also. bri :) P.S. both the person-who-does-not-exist and i, and Abekah [in HIS comment] agree that boy inside the man came to mind after reading your man inside the boy. is this an 10 year-old boy speaking to a 20 year-old woman whom he thinks he loves? ? [the person-who-does-not-exist thought of this idea, and now says it is an excellent poem, though it can be refined some and can be made better] from you youth, Brian? DO you have Dr. Pepper in your heart? REALLY! ?

Wonderful poem, Brian. If one is hungry for verse that is entertaining and satisfying, your poem is certainly food for thought.

This poem is amazingly surprising! Its style is unique as it employs series of critical questions to establish its theme. As the poet repeats the simple question 'can you? ' to emphasize the significance and the urgency of the answers, the poet seeks to establish certainty as well as security in his life. In the first stanza, the poet- lover ask his lover, whether she can equally feel the pain that has dominated his mind? He continues to inquire whether she can as well feel that which he can even voice out. This suggests a deep psychological trauma. In the second stanza, the poet ask three important questions whose answers are of immense benefit to his writing of poetry. He ask, '' can you appreciate my art? (poetry I think) , the poet wish to know if his lover really sees the significance of the poetry that he writes for her, he goes on an extra mile to ask whether his lover knows what he(the poet) has in his heart for her(maybe Dr. Pepper but I cant tell) and ends the stanza with a heart breaking question, ''can you imagine us apart? '' The third stanza, which makes use of idiomatic expressions, ask interesting questions as the poet ask whether his lover can breathe him(how?) but quickly tells the lover to inhale him rather. He further ask his lover whether she can see behind the veil, and ends by inquiring from his lover if she can drink from the lost grail. I think this is an extension of the previous stanza, still emphasizing on the many things in stock for his lover. In the fourth stanza, the poet ask his lover to see the 'man' inside the 'boy'(though I thought the reverse the rather) , and ask his lover to allow him to fill her heart with joy just as 'the little boy in him' may make him laugh. In the penultimate stanza, the poet simply ask his lover to always bear with him and persist the 'extra mile' and let go off all mistakes that may occur. He puts it gently, Can you persist the extra mile? Can you my slip-ups not compile? And finally ends with a promise note in the final stanza that says, If these small things you can do, God! Please take my IOU, There is no doubt I will be true, To you. This is a masterpiece and i love every part of it. Well done!
