Perchance, Perchance... On a hazy, lazy afternoon…
We could lay-low on the Sphinx’s toe We could have tea on the Baltic Sea We could fly kites & ride whales Or make dark light & grow tails
Breathing through our eyes Living all 9 lives Turning into stones F*cking without bones
Strolling in the dark, on empty rainy streets Groping in the park & quoting good ol’ Yeats
Burning down a bank Firing flowers from a tank Dancing on Jupiter’s rings Crowning Jesters, jesting Kings
But perchance, perchance, We went to France…
We could throw flour! From the…. Eiffel Tower? ! But it wouldn’t go to waste – The rain would make a paste Because “it always pours the first day” (As Sabrina would say) We’d make a hollow statue of Apollo With the papier-mâché
We could spend the day inside the Louvre Exploring its treasures We could spend the night at Ferrer’s Drinking in the absinthian pleasures Paint our faces, go downtown, & mimic a Mime, ask people if they'd like to make out with murder! & Dance with the dead? Trust your gut, like Von Herder (The experience’s sublime!) Or maybe just read our chapbooks instead! ?
We can go back in time, & fight at vimy ridge! We would never be quiet - Start fires & riots With all the anarchist kids!
Tread stone cobbled streets Eat Artisan baguette Carousing with beats Smoking Hashish cigarettes
Waste away In a Parisian café Ride royal racehorses Through a tame tepid town Shouting “We’re armed literary forces! ” Making older folks frown They’d scowl & growl “C’est fou! C’est fou! ” While wagging fingers at me & U! Visit Moulin Rouge For the gaudy bawdy views! Enjoy the cabaret But leave halfway-thru Lured by a green faery To wander the cemetery
Lie next to Wilde & Morrison! Visit Moliere & Chopin! Stand beside Piaf! Proust! & Bizet! In ‘Le Père Lachaise’
Perchance, perchance We went to France – Even for just a day! _________________________________________________ With credit to Michael Manners for creative input & advice

I really like it, Delwen, and what you think sounds unfinished and improvised is exactly what I think works well. You are obviously very well read, and there are plenty of references to other literary persons, places, ideas, etc. etc. The sing songy impro feel works fantastically when juxtaposed with all these big names and references. This poem could never be formal. It would be too heavy. This is touching because it has the timbre and haphazard rhythm of a child's pat-a-cake nursery rhyme, but behind it the wisdom of an educated young woman. I wouldn't change a thing! |
