People Poem by Maja Dezulovic

People

We're all just people.
Everything you can do
I can do
And
All that I do
You can do too.

We're all just people
The self-made billionaire
And the slum bum
Rolex or unbranded
Bought or donated
Tailored or barefooted.

We're all just people
Searching for ourselves
Within ourselves
Without ourselves
In God
In goods
In science
Or wild-eyed prophesies.

We're all just people
Trying to convince
Other people
But mostly ourselves
That we're
Better
Worse
Smarter
Stupider
Uglier
Prettier
Less or more than we are.

We're all just people
Failing to recognize
That the mirror of ourselves
Lies merely in each other
Because
We're all just people.
