Passive Resistance

It is like this in other lands,
Where eyes watch the burnt fields and
Seeds breech the rows of ash
Only to die after short and
Worthless lives amongst the salted sands.
Where men and women have
Lost their places, and
Children wear their crying masks;
Tired screaming,
Muffled tears.
The tide is coming,
the tide is-

The drowning voices
Drink salt water,
Throats tangle on tonic.
Deeper, they sink;
They cannot swim.

And our vengeful spirits,
Damned by men no greater than us,
Die again in every memory.
We, host to oblivion,
Cast our tools aside;
Our work is done.
