Paralyzed Poem by Nez Nut

Paralyzed

It’s raining at my windowpane
Raindrops falling outside the empty lanes
Trees sway along my rusty gates
I sit on my chair
Watching these happen
My legs, and brain, reacting late

I sit still on my rocking chair
Look at my reflection
My balding white hair

I look around
Maid and helpers
Cleaning my house
My old caring wife
By my side

I look into her eyes
I try to smile
I can’t
Frustrated
I try to clench my fists
I can’t
Hopeless
I start to cry
Looking into my wife’s eyes
Tears falling down
My heart is aching
But no one hears me
My heart is aching

My wife wipes my tears
Looks into my eyes
Touching my pale cold cheeks
Making them feel so alive

Her mouth moves to my ears
My ears that hear
Ears that still hear

She whispers
“ Don’t need to cry my baby boy
you may be old, you may just die
but just know that no matter what
I’ll always be by your side”
With that,
Kisses my lips

I’m unable to return her the kiss
I cry
Frustrated
Touched
I don’t know

But my wife knows
I know she does.
