Painting Lessons Poem by Rita Shay

Painting Lessons

Rating: 2.8

I had a neighbor once
Named Alison.
She was so beautiful
But never wore any makeup
So one day I asked her
Why she put nothing on her face
Alison told me that people will tell
That makeup makes women beautiful
But she doesn’t buy it.
When I asked what’s wrong with mascara?
She told me sure it’s pretty
But when you cry out happiness or joy
It looks like an ugly oil river dripping down
A beautiful face.
She went on to tell that she does not dare
Paint her lips red
Because her boyfriend likes them nude.
She told me she once wore base
And her grandma Rosalie told Alison
That she missed those dots of freckles
She told me
Our face aren't canvases to be painted on,
They are already paintings.
Too beautiful to ruin
