Paddy Field Poem by Somanathan Iyer

Paddy Field

A village I had been to
far from the town
rich and remote
with abundant nature
paddy is their main crop
visible there wherever we go
an evening walk took me to the fields
a memorable visit it remained always
like the students of olden days
bowing down in veneration
the paddy crop ripe for harvest
bending down with full of yield
pumped out water from nearby well
reaching the fields through tiny canals
the scent of the fields drenched by water
filled the air through gentle blown breeze
birds and cranes hovered round the fields
birds for the grains and cranes for frogs
to threaten the birds here and there
human like images erected on bamboo sticks
yet the birds are clever bothered never about it
instead birds seen perching on the same
helpless farmer running there to shoo them away
