Our Meeting Poem by Alex Hamilton

Our Meeting

Today was our meeting
The first for some years.
You gave me cool greeting
And no sign of tears.
Our talk was so stilted
Embarrassed we felt.
Our old love had wilted
Like snow on the melt.

Remember our wedding,
So joyous and free.
No fear where we’re heading,
Just good could we see:
Love making for ever,
Our bodies so strong;
The bond would not sever,
We could do no wrong.

But love built on madness,
As madness it was,
Can bring only sadness,
No matter the cause.
If for truth we are blind
The fruit will not grow.
The poor crops that we find
Will be what we sow.

A new lover you got
Soon after two years.
The beauty we had sought
Had ended in tears.
Each other we wished well,
Whate’er that did mean.
But oft did my mind dwell
On what might have been.
