Our First Day At Virginia Beach Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

We arrived here after four o'clock in the afternoon
The beach was very crowded with so many people
Bright amber light shone under the blue sky
Swim suits of all colors surrounded mushroomed beach umbrellas.
Afternoon sunshine reflected on brown sands
People played with coming waves or basked in the hot sun.
A kite soared very high in the sky as it rode on good winds
Thousands of ocean waves competed in breaking at the shoreline
Many seagulls flew above the beach and ocean water
A flying jet-plane crossed the sound barrier
with a sudden roar that tore the eastern sky.
After resting for a short while in a shore front hotel
We decided to come out to play on the beach.
We waited and watched the breaking of coming waves
Then we ran as fast as we could away from these waves.
Gradually we got used to the cold water
We enjoyed our beach time with loud talk and laughter.
The rising tide brought stronger and bigger waves
Finally, our heads got wet because of powerful waves.
This was our family outing together
Including Tony, his wife Annie, their four children
Grandchildren's youngest aunt and my wife
to make our group of nine.
There was a spectacular firework show in the late evening
After watching that, we returned to the hotel to sleep.

NGÀY ĐẦU TIÊN TẠI VIRGINIA BEACH


Tới đây sau bốn giờ chiều
Bãi biển đông lắm, bao nhiêu là người.
Trời xanh, mầu nắng vàng tươi
Áo quần đủ sắc, mái dù chen nhau.
Nắng chiều phản chiếu cát nâu
Người thì dỡn sóng, người nằm tắm da.
Con diều cỡi gió bay cao
Ngàn con sóng biển đua nhau vỗ bờ.
Hải âu bay lượn trên không
Phản lực đột xuất xé trời phía đông.
Sau khi tạm nghỉ trong phòng
Chúng tôi quyết định ra bờ nước chơi.
Chờ khi sóng nước đập bờ
Chúng tôi chuẩn bị co giò nhẩy mau.
Từ từ quen nước quen chân
Chúng tôi vui lắm oang oang nói cười.
Thủy triều dâng sóng cao hơn
Rút cục ai nấy ướt chân tới đầu.
Gia đình đoàn tụ với nhau
Tony cùng vợ và bầy con ngoan.
Thêm vào lại có dì Ngân
Tôi và vợ nữa, thành ra chín người.
Tối khuya, vui ngắm pháo bông
Vãn tuồng, tất cả về phòng ngủ đêm.
