Ordinary Life Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Ordinary Life

I would rather be loved by you
Than admired by the world.
I would rather build a foundation for you
Than a fantasy for everybody.

I would rather create a family with you
Than an empire on my own.
I would rather grow old unknown
Than famous and alone.

You may not know me.
You do not understand me.
You will not sacrifice your time for me.
But that does not change the need I feel.

So I will build while you toil.
I will plan while you travel.
I will wait while you make your attempt
To bring the world to your feet.

And whether you succeed or fail
I will be prepared to accept you as you are
Into the sanctuary I have nurtured
To turn a public life into a private paradise.

So while you greet the people
I will stay at home.
While you make the speeches
I will write my poems.

And when we have passed over the arc of vitality
And slipped into the years of fragility
You can spend your days by the fireplace
Recalling your past power.

While I, one poem at a time,
Will let the world know what life has been
For a woman content to dedicate her days
To the glorification of the ordinary.

Exploring your earlier postings I picked this one for its title, Suzanne. I like it! Like it for the contentment it embodies, a contentment I enjoy at times but struggle with at others. A number of resonant lines here; this one could stand for the whole—I would rather grow old unknown than famous and alone. Good stuff. -Glen
