Only The Ghosts Poem by paul righetti

Only The Ghosts

I used to watch you dance
across the family verandah
in the cool of an afternoon storm
And you would hide your hair
under that purple towel and shiver
in the sun that was keeping you warm.

And only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you
run through the fields in the rain
and it’s only the ghosts that
see your pain.

You used to smile at me
across the fences in the morning
as you rode off to school ev’ry day.
And you would ring your bell
until we sat down to my supper
in the light as it faded away.

And only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you
climbing the trees down the lane
and it’s only the ghosts that
see your pain.

Sometimes I call on you
across the cemetery courtyard
in the heat of an apricot sky
I lost my sense of faith
In God the moment you were taken
and I will never understand why

And only the ghosts see me now
Only the ghosts see me now
Only the ghosts see me
down on my knees by your side
and it’s only the ghosts that
see me cry

Only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you now
Only the ghosts see you now
