One For The Road Poem by Leonard Dabydeen

One For The Road

Then I sat on the stool
with head bowed as if in prayer
just waiting for it to happen
as the bartender looked at me
just one more for the road
I plea bargained for -
even if he knew
every drunk’s prayer;
he stood there
whispering to his mind
undecided like a bullet
in an AK45 in a prison camp
I shot at him with an eye lid
to feel his response
but he knew it was over
I was just a dead drunk
no need for the hint
it will not be
one more for the road:
never was
never shall be.
