On The Way Out Poem by Francis Duggan

On The Way Out

His praises the voters so often did sing
But to power Johnny Howard desperately does cling
His deputy Peter Costello for the Prime Ministership must wait
That is if Australia's voting public with Howard does keep faith
'Twould seem that time on Johnny is taking toll
The Labor Party leader Kevin Ruud well ahead in every public opinion poll
The man of the fifties is on the way out
His ability to remain as Prime Minister he now even doubt
And for Costello his chance of P M may have gone
But life in Australia will surely go on
For eleven years as Prime Minister empowered
But the Australian voters seemingly tiring of Howard
To his perch of power like a leech he does cling
But the praises of Ruud the majority sing.
