On The Good Ship Lollipop Poem by Patricia Gale

On The Good Ship Lollipop

Rating: 5.0

We danced our cares away by the yard light out back
Playing hide in go seek and mummy in the grave yard
While the fireflies were our captives
Held prisoner in a mason jar
Dreaming the night away as they flickered in our bedrooms till morning

After school we rode the banana seat Schwin’s down the big hill
(That does not look so big now)
A deck of playing cards or straws in the spokes
Click, click as we rode on by
Candy cigarettes in a box
Roll our sleeves up and act like James Dean
Playing red rover and double dutch till dad came home
Then out the door but be in the yard by dark

Playing the game of life take a spin
And you have twins
The dating game see who you had
A roll of the dice and prince charming was the one
See how high you could fly on the swings
Then twist around pinching your fingers in the chains
Round and round on the merry go
Till your head and stomach spun
Zagnut bars and penny candy
Bottle of coke was just our size

Trading the good ship lollipop for boys and dances
Friday night drive ins
And Saturday roller rinks
Prince charming never came like in the game
A job, then family and the good ship lollipop sailed away leaving us behind
But the memories remain
And soon the ship will hopefully sail again
If I pass on my boarding pass to my children’s children
And pull the plug on the video games

Oh Patricia, you did take me back...all the way to when i was so very very young! I never asked you as you list your home as the USA, but are you originally from England or Austrailia...as i noticed some of your wording and spelling and such, which reminds me of the English.. You penned a most beautiful piece, always love to read your work! Theo

Patricia, this poem brings back wonderful memories. A reminder of what play used to be like before video games were ever invented. Great fun! ! Brian
