On The Day That Mum Died Poem by Francis Duggan

On The Day That Mum Died

The weather was wintery on the day that Mum died
The cold winds of February blew across the countryside
For years ailing of lung cancer her end painful and slow
Of suffering in her life she surely did know
Back in nineteen sixty six that is going back in time
When I was a few years short of my life's prime
Since then many Seasons have come and have gone
But memories of that day in me living on
Not one leaf to be seen on any deciduous tree
On that sad day for Dad and my siblings and me
Though we'd never see her in the flesh again
Her life's struggles over she was free of pain
The heavy gray clouds were pregnant with rain
And only sad memories of that sad day with me remain.
