On Her Own Poem by Francis Duggan

On Her Own

Sixty six on her last birthday better days she has known
Life it isn't very easy for an ageing woman on her own
Her husband with another woman though she was his devoted wife
Perhaps now she will remain as single for the duration of her life
Her son and his wife live in a distant city with their schoolgoing family
Just for a few days at Christmas is all of them she gets to see
Yet she feels reasonably happy I am lucky she does say
There are millions worse off than me in the World of today
On her own but not unhappy she will not allow life to get her down
She will never be referred to as the sad sack of the town
Sixty six she looks much younger though in her brown hair there's much gray
She greets everybody she meets with a smile and a good day
She is one who knows of the hard times of an easy life she cannot tell
But she looks at life on the bright side and on the past she does not dwell.
