On Hearing A Willy Wagtail Poem by Francis Duggan

On Hearing A Willy Wagtail

The beauty of Nature a wonderful thing
This morning at dawn willy wagtail did sing
In the park off the street on a mirror bush tree
His somewhat scratchy song seems familiar to me

He sings the same song at nightfall and daybreak
And his is a voice that one cannot mistake
And in his breeding season he sings in the night
I often have heard him in the pale moonlight.

Black and white fantails or Aussie nightingales names some know them by
The willy wagtails of humans not that shy
I have heard them sing whilst to them I stood near
Though their songs are not that melodious or clear.

On this overcast morning on the first day of May
The willy wagtail sung for to welcome the day
On a cool start to May to where I live nearby
He sung in the park under a cloudy sky.
