On A Highway Past The East Side of Reno Poem by Little Eagle McGowan

On A Highway Past The East Side of Reno

On a highway past the east side of Reno
Bout passed out with a sign on his chest
Dad hollered 'man that's somebody I know '
Pulled over at nobody's behest
In daddy's arms he drank one last swallow
Said 'Bye friend', drew his last breath.
I saw a teardrop fall on a dead hobo
I heard dad say… staring out west.

He ain't dead… he's only sleeping
He's done with the push and the shove
Every promise left in his keeping
Like his word was as pure as a dove.
The seeds that he sowed someone's reaping
In crops that helps them rise above
The trouble that this world keeps heaping
On the ones who keep living to love.

The home of the brave they took for free
In God's name they do all their wrong
The Black man sees way past eternity
White man's hate will then be long gone.
Children's fate now killing their destiny
If they ain't murdered before being born
And evil grows in the powers that can be
It's left to us to keep singing this song…
