Oh, Sweet Gentle Angel You Poem by Peter Mamara

Oh, Sweet Gentle Angel You

by M. Eminescu (1850-1889)

Oh, sweet gentle angel you
With remarkable big eyes,
Why do you come out again
And burden my thought?
It seemed that I forgot you
And I shall not hear you
Remind me of a day of my life
— From my native village.
Can you still remember
When we walked barefoot,
And you sat down,
And you listened to my moving stories?
I was telling you
How a prince went
To the New World,
Where he found his love.

You opened your eyes, like
You didn't believe what I said.
Despite the fact that you understood
— That I told the story for your own benefit.
And then when I'd ask you
To tell me if you love me
You hardy answered
— And only with your lips.

And you answered to me tenderly:
"You won't search for me anymore,
For I shall be yours forever,
You are so dear to me, that I feel I die."
You forgot what you said.
You didn't tell me to come
Next to you in the crypt
— In a coffin at your left hand-side.

And today, when it looked like
I forgot you forever,
You appeared in my mind
Like you looked when I was young.
Your breath, flew gently, and refreshed me
And revived my first love.

Talk louder to me.
Why are you afraid of me?
Very soon, I too
It seems that I shall leave
Following your way
— My sweet babe you.
