Oh Caroline Poem by Gil Tee

Oh Caroline

I've abridged this. Yes, I know - not enough!

Leaving on a northbound bus I caught sight of you
Standing at your office window looking at the view
And suddenly my heart beat faster, suddenly I knew
That it would be the final glimpse I'd ever have of you
Oh Caroline, you looked so fine...

It was love at first sight for me
How your smile excited me
It made the world look bright to me
Just like the warm sunshine
Oh Caroline

The freckles on your face ran wild
They seemed like sunspots when you smiled
I was instantly beguiled
When first your eyes met mine
Oh Caroline

You were in a party dress
I didn't look so good I guess
But when I asked, you answered Yes
And I was on cloud nine
Oh Caroline

Those dances that I shared with you
Seemed just like a dream come true
But dreams don't last, they never do
Especially when they're mine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline, Oh Caroline

I swear I was in love with you
But I just didn't have a clue
You were much too well-to-do
So rich and so refined
Oh Caroline

You said you didn't want to know
That you could never love me, so
You thought I really ought to go
You made me feel so tin-
-y Caroline

I'd never felt that way before
Just like a wave upon the shore
I kept on coming back for more
But all I got was brine
Oh Caroline

You shattered all my boyish hopes
Abandoned me to sit and mope
While you went on to higher slopes
To ski somewhere Alpine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline, Oh Caroline

You were the sweetest thing I'd seen
With hair of bronze and eyes of green
I sometimes think what might have been
If only you'd been mine
Oh Caroline

But that was years and years ago
Where you are now I wouldn't know
I guess some lucky so-and-so
Is sharing your red wine
Oh Caroline

And though you broke my heart in two
I managed to get over you
Something I thought I'd never do
But all things heal in time
Oh Caroline

I hope the sun still shines on you
And from your eyes the whole day through
I hope you've found a love that's true
Much worthier than mine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline, Oh Caroline
