Oh! Bread Poem by G. Akanji Olaniyi

Oh! Bread

Oh Bread! We swear never to be your enemy.
But how come you have so many friends and lovers?
Some say; “tea is your best friend”
Others argued that you are in love with butter.
We have seen you going out with cooked beans.
They said fried meat and fried fish are fighting over you.
What about your rumoured affairs with egg; boiled and fried?
It is an open secret that you are in good terms with fresh water
We heard you enjoy the company of soft drinks.
The other day, you were seen frolicking with steaming stew.
What about the many breakfasts you had with margarine?
We learnt you do not argue with tasty suya at dinner.
A lot of times, it has been reported that you picnic with strawberry jam
We hope you are not a “casaloafer”
May be you just enjoy playing around
Listen! ! ! We all love you
Be careful of contamination!
So stay wrapped in your polythene
Or stay cool and fresh in the fridge
Yes! You are regular caller to our house
And though we had you yesterday
We do not seize in our prayer to the LORD;
“Give us this day, our daily bread”
